Heathcotes introduce Mental Health First Aiders to support colleagues nationwide

The mental health and wellbeing of Heathcotes’ service users are paramount, but the welfare of our staff is also a key priority. That’s why we’ve set up a Mental Health First Aid team to support our employees at head office and services nationwide.

Earlier this year, Heathcotes welcomed Wellspring Training for a recent session at our Chesterfield head office, where they provided a Mental Health First Aid seminar for our Service Managers, staff from various HQ teams and some department leads. Wellspring taught the basic foundations of how to support somebody who is developing a mental health issue or suffering a mental health crisis.  Our staff learned how to spot the early signs of a mental health issue as well as feel confident in how to offer and provide initial help.

Natalia Lysiuk, Director of Business Development, was one of the staff who attended the session. Natalia commented on the value of the training:

“Wellspring were very insightful about how we can support each other through greater awareness of mental health. The training gave us more understanding of the stigma that exists around mental health issues, which often prevents people from sharing their problems. We also came away with an understanding of how we can guide someone to appropriate treatment and sources of help. Offering that support and promoting recovery could preserve life when a person may be at risk to themselves or others. The delivery of Mental Health First Aid is most relevant in situations when it first becomes apparent that somebody in your professional network is developing a mental health issue, but it is also valuable in supporting somebody who has a history of mental illness.”

All staff in Heathcotes services are aware of the company’s Mental Health First Aiders and know how to contact us. The team is available whenever someone needs support and doesn’t feel comfortable sharing their problems with their immediate workmates. Being there for your colleagues is a vital aspect of working life – thanks to Wellspring, we now have an even greater appreciation of how valuable that is.
