Autism and Asperger's Syndrome
Our Autism services provide specialist input for service users with both high and low functioning Autism. Our staff are trained to develop strategies for each individual to maximise communication and moderate behaviour.
We use a range of communication aids where required and each individual has a Communication Passport which lists individual needs and wishes and the appropriate equipment required. Service users receive support to develop appropriate social communications skills.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans are in place for each service user and PBS is used to engage service users and minimise challenging behaviour. We use the NAPPI behaviour scale to identify the positive influences for each person that aim to reduce the level of challenging behaviour. Our specialist Behaviour Team are on hand to interpret challenging behaviour and identify the root cause or what that person is trying to tell us. We offer a structured leisure and activity programme which focuses on the individual’s preferences.
Our services are located in residential areas with a wealth of community facilities nearby; our service users can develop strong links with local amenities and further develop such links on leaving our services. Each service provides spacious, calm environments that meet the environmental needs of service users with Autism. Our services have small bed numbers, all have outside space and many have sensory areas. All bedrooms are ensuite and we have worked hard to maintain a homely atmosphere in which service users can feel safe and supported.
