As part of a structured 10 week, Skills for Care based programme, all new staff attend a 5 day induction course just before or soon after they start work at a Heathcotes service. Delivered centrally by L&D, the course consists of a series of modules aimed at ensuring the new starter can work safely and effectively – under supervision – at their new service.
Learners receive a company orientation, a series of tutor-led, learner-centred sessions on health and safety, basic life support, safe moving, safe food handling, understanding social care values, understanding learning disability, person-centred working, Mental Capacity Act, ethical social care practice, reflective practice and effective communication. During the final 2 days, learners attend a behaviour support module at the end of which they are qualified to NAPPI Level 2.
Ongoing Induction Support
Having completed the induction bloc, learners then return to their service, where they will complete up to 4 days of shadow shifts under the supervision of their service manager. During the induction bloc, learners are given an individual knowledge folder with worksheets to complete. Reviewed throughout the induction period, the folder is then quality checked by Heathcotes Learning to ensure learners have been properly supported. Having completed the process, this folder then forms the knowledge requirements for a Level 2 Award in Health & Social Care – Supporting Learning Disability.
