The Good Life!

29th Sep 2011

Staff and service users at Heathcotes Knollbeck in Barnsley have been busy in the garden all summer, creating a small allotment, installing poly-tunnels and raised beds and building a deluxe coop for their free-range chickens.

The home has a huge rear garden and it has been put into really good use, becoming home to several rabbits and guinea pigs as well as the chickens and at one point, thanks to Alan, a resident who works part time at an Owl Sanctuary, it was home to a recovering Tawny Owl!

The chickens have been a very popular addition and service users are now enjoying caring for them and harvesting delicious free range eggs on a daily basis; a treat for everyone is when Support Worker Jamie Oliver, a former chef (seriously!) uses the whites to make delicious home-made ice cream.

Lynsey Hutson, Registered Manager of the service, said "It's great to have such an active and dynamic group of service users and staff - everyone gets on really well and this garden project has been a fantastic bonding activity."

David Harrison, Managing Director of the Heathcotes Group added, "We all know that being outside, getting active and keeping physically fit helps to maintain mental wellbeing; this service does a great job in that regard and we're proud to support it."
