The CQC's new inspection regime is well underway, with 18,000 care homes now registered and all health and social care providers required to evidence their compliance with the new Essential Standards of Quality and Safety. The Heathcotes Group has hosted inspections at 9 locations since the process began and we are very happy to report that our results have been extremely positive - 3 locations have been adjudged to be 100% compliant, with no 'concerns' at any level, and where concerns have been expressed, they have been moderate and easy to resolve.
Tracy Mason, Regional Manager for Heathcotes in the East Midlands said, "The inspection process has been very positive - we did a lot of work when the Essential Standards were first issued, to make sure that we understood the new expectations and most importantly, that we were able to evidence our compliance; the best advice I can offer to anyone is that it's no longer enough to just say that you're doing something - you have to be able to prove it!"

- People we spoke to during our inspection visit told us that there were usually enough staff available and they felt they all got on well together. One person told us; "The staff are really good. There is always someone to talk to and to have a laugh with."
- The atmosphere in the house was friendly and relaxed.
- When a person became anxious and distressed staff took prompt action to help calm them and distract them.
- We spoke to some people's relatives to ask for their views on the service provided. One of these told us they felt their relative was well supported because their individual needs were taken into account; "They are part of a community but also have their own privacy and space."
- People were being supported to manage their behaviour. One person told us that if he got angry the staff were not cross with him but talked to him.
- Relatives told us that they found the staff friendly and welcoming. They said the staff kept them up to date with information. They felt that the staff looked after their relative well.
- We saw that people were encouraged to be as independent as possible. People helped to keep their bedroom tidy, some people helped with cooking and preparing meals and went shopping both for food and for personal items.
- One person using the service told us that they were supported by staff in attending college and looking for a job. They also went shopping with the staff which they said they enjoyed. They told us they were happy living at Heathcotes Arnold and staff were very nice, helped them when needed and always did as they were asked.
