Employee focus - Amanda Dean

8th Jun 2012

Amanda Dean, Registered Manager at Heathcotes Blackburn, started  working  at the home at the age of 18. In the 10 years she has worked there, she has supported individuals with learning disabilities who have displayed complex needs and challenging behaviours.

Initially employed as a Support Worker, Amanda took full advantage of the training and support that was on offer and within 6 months, achieved a more senior role.

During her time as House Leader, the company went into administration and as a result, she was made responsible for the running of the home until a Manager was appointed. Suddenly Amanda was in charge of the day to day running of the home which included working alongside professional bodies, writing care plans and risk assessments and attending multidisciplinary meetings, to ensure individuals received a high standard of care that was tailored to their needs.

Amanda said, "I have always taken a person centred approach when working with individuals and their families - it just seemed like a very natural thing to do."

Amanda has led her home through difficult times and since being taken over by Heathcotes, she has overseen a major refurbishment and substantial improvements in the life opportunities and quality of care being provided at the home. This has been reflected in the results of recent inspections and Amanda clearly puts these outstanding reports down to having an amazing home, a great staff team and the support and guidance of a fantastic organisation.

Recent inspections by both Blackburn with Darwen PCT and the Care Quality Commission acknowledged her efforts to encourage individuals to make their own choices and respect their rights and wishes, with the PCT recommending other providers visit Amanda to look at the high standards she has achieved at Heathcotes Blackburn.
