Today we are hearing from Carol Harwood, Deputy Manager at Heathcotes Blackburn:

'I started working at Florence House eight years ago as a support worker, this was my first job in the world of care and I soon realised that it was the career for me.  I have gained experience working alongside adults with learning disabilities, complex needs and challenging behaviours and how getting to know people on an individual basis make my job an enjoyable one.  Whilst I was a support worker I undertook my NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care, I learnt so much from these qualifications and they helped me have a better understanding of our service users and their needs.

In 2010 I was promoted to the role of Deputy Manager and in March 2013 I completed my NVQ Level 4 in Leadership and Management.  Once again this NVQ gave me a greater understanding of how the home functions and how to manage staff and work with professional bodies.  My eventual goal with Heathcotes is to manage my own home.

Outside of work I have just started learning to drive so my spare time is spent practicing driving techniques.  I do find this extremely nerve-wracking as I have been involved in a severe car accident previously.  I really do have to push myself to go for each lesson but thanks to the support from my colleagues, service users and family I keep going.  Happily I have alredy passed my theory test so I can now concentrate on the practical side of my test, it is scary but I will persevere and get there in the end.

I also go to Slimming World every Monday and I'm happy to report that my weight is going the right way and decreasing gradually.  I really enjoy taking my dog for walks on a daily basis and go swimming whenever I can.  I am very family orientated so I also see them as much as I can in the spare time I have.
