Heathcotes launches new Prader- Willi service
The latest addition to the Heathcotes Group, Heathcotes Alverthorpe, will be opening its doors in Wakefield in February. Here, we are due to open our second specialist Prader-Willi residential service due to the current lack of specialist provision and the high demand for supporting individuals with this diagnosis, in a tailored environment.
Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic condition that causes a wide range of difficulties. These may include; a constant desire to eat food- which appears to be driven by a permanent feeling of hunger and can easily lead to dangerous weight gain- and restricted growth, leading to short stature and reduced muscle tone (hypotonia).
Heathcotes have a wealth of expertise in the field of Prader- Willi. Our existing service in Bridlington has been providing positive outcomes for service users since 2011. Our Prader-Willi services have specialist input from our Clinical Psychologist who supports the service with psychological assessments and interventions. Katie, who currently lives at Heathcotes Bridlington, says; ‘I would say it has been my best decision of my life [moving to Heathcotes]. Becki and the team promote exercise activities and support me to maintain diet plans to support my weight loss. The staff and service users are brilliant here. Reaching my achievement has saved my life I am very happy to say now that I weigh 10st 5lbs having lost over 9 stone.
