Heathcotes Knollbeck brings the seaside inland!
Residents at Heathcotes’ Knollbeck services traditionally head out for a day at the beach in early summer. The lockdown has forced them to cancel their trip this year, but the inventive support staff found a way to bring the seaside feel to their front door!
Fun in the water is a must for any beach outing. Knollbeck made it possible by setting up a paddling pool which brought some welcome cool in the hot weather. Some service users put on their swimwear to take a splash whilst others jumped in fully clothed – joined by some of the staff!
Ask anyone what food they associate with seaside resorts and they will invariably come up with one of two answers: ice cream or fish and chips. Knollbeck staff decided to treat service users to both – and added an extra layer of authenticity by wrapping the fish and chips in newspaper! It remined the residents of Papa’s, their favourite chippy on Cleethorpes Pier, wrapping up a wonderful day of partying in the sun.
Service Manager, Jodie Marshall, was delighted with the success of the idea:
“The service users always look forward to our trips to the seaside and they were understandably disappointed not to be able to go during these very unusual times. We decided to give them an experience as close as possible to the real thing and they loved it! Many residents have been asking when they can do it again. Hopefully, very soon if we get some more warm, sunny weather!”
The support work being done at Knollbeck is another example of the enormous difference that our support teams have been making in helping our service users to cope with the disruption of coronavirus. At services nationwide, our staff have shown amazing initiative and resourcefulness in reducing the impact of the pandemic. We all like to be beside the seaside, but Heathcotes Knollbeck looks like a very entertaining alternative!
